North East Italy

Geography: Very mountainous and dramatic in Trentino-Alto Adige on the Austrian / Swiss border. Strong Germanic cultural influence, partly bilingual, to the extent that some of the wines are labeled in German. Gentler hills in and a coastal plane in the Friuli region, where cultural influence is Slavic as well as Germanic and Italian. Mainly hills again in the vast Veneto region, stretching inland from behind the lagoons around Venice north to the Alps and west to the picturesque Lake Garda. Emilia-Romagna, straddling both the north east and north west, is mainly flat, fertile agricultural land south of the Po valley, with a reputation for prosperity and a rich cuisine to match, particularly from Bologna and Parma.
Key Wine Styles: Crisp aromatic whites from the northern mountainous regions, light fruity reds and pleasant whites elsewhere. And of course the much despised (unjustly) sweetish sparkling reds of Lambrusco. Amarone della Valpolicella - made from semi dried grapes of the straight Valpolicella blend, is a magnificent style of rich, dry yet bittersweet red.

Key Grape Varieties and their wines: Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay (Friuli and Trentino- Alto Adige), as well as Moscato and Sauvignon Blanc also in Trentino Alto-Adige.

Garganega (white) goes to make up most of the blend in easy drinking Soave, which is east of Valpolicella north of Verona.

The lively, fruity reds of Valpolicella and Bardolino are made from a blend of Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara. As are the spectacular wines made as Amarone della Valpolicella.

Matt's 'Must-Trys' from this region: Amarone or Amarone-style reds - check out our Palazzo della Torre from the well known Allegrini estate.
