Central and Southern Spain

Geography: The meseta plateau dominates central Spain and south of Madrid it continues for mile after mile in a seemingly endless flat arid desert which is subject to the extremes of temperature of the ultimate continental climate. This is Castilla-La Mancha, the famous La Mancha of Don Quijote. An enormous amount of bulk wine is grown in this area for domestic consumption and distillation for brandy. Further south and east, though, the presence of the Mediterranean can be increasingly felt. In the Levante region around the city of Valencia the plateau breaks up into hills slowly descending to the (heavily developed) coast. Here there is a cluster of increasingly innovative wine growing areas producing simple, good value reds and whites. Similarly, further west and south in Andalucia, the plateau breaks up into hills and descends to the coast where we find Sherry country around the town of Jerez. |
